We're Not Made of Sugar!

Talk about a fabulous weekend! I spent the past two days with some awesome gals, eating great food, hiking, chatting and thoroughly enjoying ourselves. After a wonderful time at the student hut with the "Sleep in the woods" trip, we wanted to repeat the fun with a more personal group.

It was overcast when we started out, and while the less-than-ideal weather kept some of our other hiking partners at home, the four of us ventured out into Nordmarka with high spirits. Roseanne taught us a phrase from the Netherlands- "We're not made of sugar," meaning that we can handle the rain! We took a brief stop at Ullevalseter for the requisite apple cake and cream. Ullevalseter is a popular hut in Nordmarka and is filled Norwegians escaping the city and heading into the woods for a weekend walk.

The KSI-hytta where we stayed was built by the Women Students' Sports Club in 1962. Now it is owned and maintained by OSI, the Oslo Students' Sports Club. It has room for 28 people, but we had the place to ourselves!

Phase 10: An international hit!

Nordmarkskappellet (Nordmarka Chapel) is just across the road. The chapel was designed in 1924 by Norway's first female architect, Kathina Lexow. This is a excellent example of how Norwegians utilize their natural surrondings and incorporate the environment into everyday life.

It was tough to to tear ourselves away from the card games and roaring fireplace on Sunday morning to head back to 'real life'. It proved to be a gorgeous day with perfect walking conditions. What an unforgettable Halloween weekend- I wouldn't have wanted to spend it any other way!
